…When life doesn’t quite go according to plan…love always finds a way – especially when you find a Marriage Celebrant with a ‘can do’ attitude…

…Cast your thoughts back March this year, in the weeks that lead up to #lockdownNZ…the week in which we saw the imposition of Level 4 COVID-19 restrictions by the NZ Government…with 2 days notice, flights were cancelled and borders closed…10’s of 1000’s of disappointed travellers…passports packed, ready to fly…with no-where to go…

Now…imagine the double disappointment…if you were an imminent bride-to-be, who had been planning for months to celebrate your dream to ‘get hitched’ across the ditch in Oz – you have the e-ticket, you said a definite Yes to THE dress, the rings are in the ring box…you even have a Groom…and, then…sorry…no wings!  And so it was with J & L, with their plans to get wed scuppered at the very last moment…

J called me on that Sunday evening, having come across my website in her search for a local Kerikeri Marriage Celebrant…distraught, she told me of her predicament…I can clearly remember her words:

“Can you marry us – all we want to do is get married…”

“Of course I said, when?”

J …”Thursday”!!!

“No Problem,” I said…
…So with just three days notice plan B swung into action…knowing the local venues well, I was able to tell her that her first choice of venue would not be able to cater to her particular requirements, so I suggested we develop an alternative …move to Plan C…

…With the assistance of another local ‘celebrated’ celebrant (Ida) who is also an awesome event manager…the wedding was set for Thursday 19th March, at the world-renown Duke of Marlborough Hotel, Russell.

Given the circumstances J & L asked for simple, short and sweet ceremony…there were to be just 8 people present…this included me and the photographer, a very ‘neat & tiny wedding’!!!

Because of my knowledge and experience, in just one very brief telephone conversation with J, I was able to gather all the ‘goss’ about their relationship…so that on THE day, I was still able to capture the very essence of their lovely, love story …I was even entrusted to write their personal vows…what an Absolutely Fabulous honour…to write the words that would voice their promises and cement their commitment to each other for the remainder of their lives together… how privileged am I?

Rolling up to the wedding I hadn’t met the Bride or even spoken to the Groom, but it didn’t matter, because, as always, I was stoked to meet them both for the first time…, and, as always, I was thrilled to meet their closest friends…

Our wee ‘octet’ may have been ‘a small but perfectly formed group’, but we still celebrated with gusto when our lovely couple shared that very first kiss as Mr & Mrs. K….

For J&L being married was absolutely THE most important thing to them…as a couple, it wasn’t about the first look photo’s; cocktail hour; the floral displays; the cake arrangement or the food – although, with the Duke as host I’m sure the food was Ab.Fab!!!…for them, just getting married was enough!

For many engaged couples it is the social gathering of friends and extended families for their wedding, as well as the after party, that is important to them, and understandably so – Marriage is a magnificent, milestone occasion in anyones life, and deserves to be celebrated ‘large’.  However, COVID-19 has caused a paradigm shift in our future expectations, perhaps in the ‘new norm’ we may all have to re-align our priorities…our values may have to change… if travel restrictions are ongoing long-term, and guests lists remain limited…short and sweet, but meaningful ceremonies – neat & tiny weddings… may be the way to go for the time being for many engaged couples in Aotearoa, NZ …that said…’tiny’ doesn’t have to reflect quality…after all, sometimes “less is more”… and small can also be BEAUTIFUL…

Following on from their ceremony J was kind enough to say the following words in an email:

“We look back on our March wedding which was arranged in just three days […] and are simply delighted that it not only went ahead but was such a fun and happy wedding.  Julie worked with us to achieve the wedding we were looking for, short, intimate and lovely, she helped make our wedding romantic and everything we wanted it to be.  I would not hesitate to engage Julie for any Celebrant requirements again.  Thank you Julie”.

…Proving, perhaps, that there may be some truth in the old clique that sometimes “nice things do come in smaller packages”…

It’s taking me a while, and I’ve worn lots of different ‘hats’ over the years, but now I have really have found my niche and I absolutely LOVE, LOVE my job…which is why I’m so passionate about giving my couples an awesome customer experience whatever their circumstances…I am always happy to work with my couples to create a ceremony that THEY want, providing the support and guidance they require – throughout the whole wonderful process…AND, much to my joy…I get to deliver their ceremonies with a dollop of passion, oodles of Aroha…and a just a smidgen of laughter…
